Eric's Entrepreneurial Journey

What was that point that brought you over the edge from just having it be like a side thing to like the beginning of where you are now? I think I can probably call myself the unconventional Oscar because I've started a bunch of things. Like there's this magic e-commerce site, there's like the senior living business, all these things that frankly, they failed. But I was working at a company called Treehouse. I was leading their marketing. And in the past they're now like a $100 million company, a company in online education. My podcast co-host right now, he was an advisor to the company. And he said, 'Would you come help this company?' And I, so that is a sign that's great. And I, this company that I have right now, when I want a hundred percent of, I actually didn't start. So I, came into the company. There are other partners in the, you have 100 percent of. I have a hundred percent of it. Okay, yeah. So, you know, there, it was myself. I'd like to say there's one yellow guy and there's Indian news. The company was failing because Google adjusted its algorithms. Interesting. Previously, just an SEO company. And then from there, like a year into it, the company was doing so poorly that I was able to buy the company for two dollars out of my pocket. And the rest was paid through the profits of the company. Wow. So you, basically came into the company as CEO or director number two. Yeah. You, number two and then you ended up buying the rest of the company and you sound like you negotiated a pretty good deal for yourself. Yeah. I don't think I'm a really good negotiator, but this was a pretty good deal because everyone else is saying get out, get out. Nila's like, the company is worth nothing right now. It has no brand equity. You should get out. And I was like, oh man, you know what, I have literally nothing to lose. So I'm going to go for it. And so that was the entrepreneurial journey for this company. And then, you know, led to starting some other stuff too, but that's the biggest success so far for myself. And you guys just got new office space. How many people do you have working for you now?

Content Marketing Secrets

If you could say real quick like a few sentences, what is content marketing and what are some of your tricks to it? Content marketing is just, it's you're building a brand, whether it's through how Jon does it through YouTube, for example, or you're creating content through blog content, audio content, whatever it is. You're trying to teach people. And then by teaching people, you're building a relationship with them, and they're coming to eventually buy whatever products or services that you have. And through content marketing, you want to talk about the reach, right? We have one podcast called Marketing School. That once, we just hit six hundred eighty thousand downloads last month. So, that's a monthly basis. We just broke. We're approaching eleven million downloads. And we've been doing it for less than two years. Thank you. And then when you just started doing the YouTube channel, that's kinda slowly growing. And then, you know, when I first joined Single Grain, the site was getting about four thousand visits an hour approaching about 115,000. But what my point of telling you all this is not to brag. Sure, we're reaching millions of people yearly and maybe even monthly too, but the thing is even with John too, with all this entrepreneur stuff, all this marketing stuff, whatever it is, it just takes a lot of time to start reaping. And I'm happy to share more stories around that, but content marketing has gotten us clients like Uber, Amazon, Lyft, Salesforce, Nordstrom, and we are building out an outbound team right now, but everything we've gotten so far is all inbound. If somebody who is trying to create an inbound marketing strategy where people are finding information about them.

Creating Evergreen Content and Skyscraper Technique

The second thing I'll say is if you're looking to do blog content like there's over two million WordPress blog posts being published every single day, Google the Skyscraper content. This is from Backlinko Skyscraper Technique. That's you looking to build a piece of content that's 10x better than whatever, the number one, two or three results. That way, you're going to be able to rank higher to people because you have a better piece of content. You reach out to people that have linked to the previous one and you marry card. We could talk about SEO, but just produce better content out there. Like the stuff that John's doing, world-class. You look at his videos. If you look at his YouTube ads, they stand out, it's freaking amazing, right? That's what it takes, you've got it, you gotta put in the work. And I mean, John does kind of a question for you. You spend a lot more time on your video than a normal person would, right? Yeah. So, we spent, we actually shot a new ad last weekend. We went up to Lighting in a Bottle, and we spent, we spent two full days filming an ad. You know, it wasn't any of this selfie stuff, you know, we spent two full days filming the ad. But, even before that, I scripted it up, you know, it took me time to come up with the idea to script it out. You know, I had to figure out what shots we were gonna get, and I made sure we had a drone and multiple cameras. And it's, it's gonna spend a few weeks in editing, you know, and back and forth until I actually release my ads. So, you know, I think about it a lot. Yeah. You're the freaking man.
